At The Celebratory Dinner at Quince
Tadashi Yanai was recently in San Francisco for the opening of the first Uniqlo store on the West Coast (at 111 Powell Street, San Francisco). As founder and CEO of Fast Retailing, Uniqlo’s parent company, and as Japan’s richest man, Yanai’s decision to open in San Francisco is symbolic of his company’s commitment to technology and innovation.
Uniqlo has set itself apart from competitors such as H&M, Gap, Zara and Forever 21, with its use of technologically advanced materials, and its newest experiment in the retail experience – a “magic mirror,” or virtual dressing room, that lets customers try out different colored jackets without moving a inch!
So to welcome Yanai and Uniqlo to San Francisco, the store’s opening and following celebratory dinner at Quince featured some of the area’s most innovative people in technology, like Dave and Brit Morin, and Twitter’s Dick Costolo, as well as our long standing cultural icons, like Joe Montana and Willie Brown, and fashion influencers Vanessa Getty, Claiborne Swanson Frank and Sabrina Buell.
The evening also included an electric performance by Goapele, who just released her new album, “Break of Dawn.”

The store is a true architectural gem in the heart of Union Square, adding even more excitement to the always bustling Powell Street, which has become a shopping playground for locals and tourists alike.
“We are very pleased with the beautiful design and stunning architecture of our Flagship San Francisco store,” said COO Yasunobu Kyogoku. “We’ve preserved the historical facade while completely remodeling the interior, rejuvenating the space with a modern contemporary twist. We’ve also infused the latest state-of-the art technology to create a marquis shopping destination.”
High-beamed ceilings and a large basement-to-roof skylight enables natural sunlight to illuminate the central glass case, housing some of the more than 91 rotating mannequins situated around the store. There’s an LED-illuminated rainbow staircase, and 77 LCD screens line the perimeter of the store on seven large monitor walls, creating an atmosphere of color, activity and fun!
