Not only is it expensive to live in San Francisco, it’s also expensive to visit. Like really expensive. In fact, it’s the MOST expensive in the world, according to a recent study by Bloomberg News.
In just the past year, the average price for a San Francisco hotel room has jumped 88 percent to $397 a night. San Francisco ranks ahead of Geneva, where the average room is $292 a night, and Milan, at $271. Chicago is tied with Miami as the second-costliest US city, at $240 a night.
Average rates in New York, meanwhile, have fallen to $202 a night.
“The influx of tech companies into San Francisco has been tremendous, and with it this new emerging traveler, this millennial traveler, who is looking for downtown experiences,” said Chuck Pacioni, general manager at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis.
Or to put it another way: “Holy cow, that’s expensive,” said every person who has looked at their hotel bill in San Francisco this year.
