Sean Penn and Jerry Brown in Oakland

Attorney General Jerry Brown and Oscar winning actor, Sean Penn recently celebrated the Oakland School for the Arts and its students in a benefit at the Oakland Fox Theatre.

The charter school was founded in 2000, dreamchild of then-Mayor Jerry Brown and its first director, Loni Berry. Originally located at the Alice Arts Center in downtown Oakland, it relocated to the Fox Theater building in January 2009. Last week, film director Francis Ford Coppola visited the school!

“It really is embodying the sparkle and excitement of downtown Oakland to have an Academy Award winner in our midst,” Brown said.

Film producer Hilary Armstrong was at the event and has been kind enough to share these photos from the evening. “The Oakland School for the Arts students are over the top talented,” she says.

And what an amazing opportunity it is for these students to have access to some of the leading figures in filmmaking!
