Nan Kempner’s Yves Saint Laurent ensemble from 1983-84.
Even if you already saw “Nan Kempner: American Chic” when it ran at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year, the de Young has given you a new reason to see it in San Francisco: 27 pieces that hadn’t been shown in New York. They are part of the de Young’s permanent collection.
Mrs. Kempner was so thin, new mannequins had to be ordered for the show so the clothing would fit properly!
Dede Wilsey says, “I hope this inspires visitors to realize the beauty of fashion as art.” It might also inspire them to go on a diet!
The exhibit runs from June 16 to November 11. Harold Koda, the curator in charge of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, will give a lecture at 7 p.m. on Friday the 15th.
