We’re pleased to see that garagemag.com, the site for the new hotly anticipated magazine – Garage Magazine – has finally launched.
Garage is the brainchild of Dasha Zhukova, the influential woman who’s at the center of contemporary culture at the highest level – and we mean that literally (her organization is called The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture.)
Founded in Moscow in an abandoned Constructivist garage in Moscow in 2007, the center has held 36 world class exhibitions in Russia, but the magazine which launched in September 2011 is designed to reach art lovers around the world.
Ms. Zhuhova describes it as “a place where we can bring to life projects that transcend the bricks and mortar of our physical space, and showcase ideas that we wish to share with a wider audience, beyond the limits of Russia.”
There’s a lot in it for people who love fashion as well. The magazine features a cover by Damien Hirst, and work by John Baldessari, Jeff Koons, and Raymond Pettibon, but also includes photography by fashion designer Hedi Slimane, and advertising from Balenciaga (Dasha Zhukova, incidentally, was on the host committee for the Balenciaga exhibit at the de Young in San Francisco.)
So is it a fashion magazine or an art magazine? “Unlike most magazines, we do not have a specific editorial model,” says Ms. Zhukova. “You will not see a ‘fashion’ or ‘design’ issue from us it’s too formulaic. Garage is about providing a unique viewing experience.”
The magazine is available at some newsstands, but if you can’t find a copy, at least you can now see it online!
