Top designers and business leaders recently gathered at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for Bloomberg Businessweek Design 2014, the magazine’s second annual design conference.
The day-long event was headlined by Hosain Rahman, Alison Pincus, Susan Feldman, Neville Brody, Elizabeth Diller, Florentijn Hofman, Bre Pettis and more. It was a truly international crowd of some of the world’s most forward-thinking design professionals spanning the disciplines of architecture, transportation, graphic design, technology, urban design, 3D printing, product manufacturing, data visualization, genetic engineering, corporate branding, and more.
The presenters discussed how great design and business can meet to overcome some of society’s most challenging problems. Perhaps the most surprising presentation was by Sha Hwang, who received a call on Christmas Eve 2013 asking him to help fix the Healthcare.gov website. He had previously been known for founding Gifpop, a Kickstarter-backed project that prints animated GIFs! Clearly, principals of design can be used to solve important problems as much as to entertain.
